SHILLONG: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is expected to allot the MBBS seats reserved for Meghalaya under the Central Pool by next week, State Health and Family Welfare Minister A.L. Hek said on Sunday.

“We have received an official communiqué from the Ministry that a total of 56 seats will be allotted to the State this year from the Central pool. We are expecting to get the final confirmation on the seats which have been allotted to us by next week,” Hek said, adding, “We will announce the merit list of candidates for the MBBS courses once we get the confirmation from the Centre.”

Hek also stated that the State Government was concerned over the delay in announcement of the merit list of the students who have been selected for various seats.

Meanwhile, a senior government official informed that the State Government had already made a formal request to the Centre to speed up the process since the students were in a state of dilemma owing to the delay.

“We have already sent two reminders to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare requesting early allotment of the seats reserved under the Central pool,” the senior official informed.

He further informed that as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) directive, the last date for seeking admission under the reserved quota is September 30.

Last year too, the State Government had declared the list of candidates in August.

Earlier, official sources had informed that the health department had already shortlisted the candidates eligible for selection which was based on their performance in the State Entrance Examination conducted on July 12.

The State Reservation Policy will be taken into account before the final allotment of seat, a senior official informed.
