Thrash Smit 7-0 in 1st Div tie

SHILLONG: Shillong United became the second team to gain promotion to the Shillong Premier League after handing a crushing 7-0 defeat to Smit in their First Division match at Polo Grounds on Tuesday.

K. Tajaddin provided the lead to the winners with a header in the 3rd minute and followed it up with another header into the nets in the 26th minute. Smit’s defensive approach backfired and led to their downfall as they conceded four goals in the first half. Loken Meitei fired one into the corner of the nets in the 35th minute before Khusen Manger scored the fourth in the 45th minute after a penalty was awarded.

Donborlang Nongkynrih was finally among the goals after a somewhat slugggish run this season. The forward scored two goals in the 58th and 82nd minutes respectively while right back Aibor Khyriemmujat added one in the 64th minute.

The victory places Shillong United with 22 points at par with Laitumkhrah.

Meanwhile, in the Third Division tourney, Jongksha beat Risa Colony 4-0. A. Rynjah scored two goals in the 17th & 29th minutes while S. Rynjah contributed two more in the 63rd & 65th minutes for the 4-0 drubbing of their opponents.

In Wednesday’s First Division game, Imson will take on Mawlai at 4 pm while Umlyngka and Lapalang will face each other in a Third Division match at 4:15 pm at Polo Grounds.
