MPSC deviates from prescribed norms: KSU

SHILLONG: The KSU has asked the Meghalaya Public Services Commission (MPSC) to cancel the advertisement for the recruitment to the post of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Inspector.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the KSU said that applications were invited for the post by MPSC from the graduate candidates with preference for candidates having an LLB Degree or experience and knowledge of Motor Vehicle Acts and Rules.

The KSU, however, claimed that MPSC had deviated from the prescribed qualification norms since the post of the Enforcement Inspector is technical in nature and only a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering has been prescribed by the Central government.

The KSU asked the MPSC to issue a fresh advertisement for the post as per the qualifications prescribed by the Central government and warned the Commission against deviating from the prescribed qualification norms in future while advertising for any post.

Kathakali dance demonstrations in city schools

SHILLONG: The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) organised Kathakali demonstration performance in six schools of Shillong from August 25-27.

Students and teachers of Pine Mount School, Govt. Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Shillong Public School, St. Margaret’s Higher Secondary School and Govt. Girls’ Higher Secondary School were treated to a wonderful demonstration of the famed Kathakali dance by Kalamandalam Amaljith with five accompanists.

Minute movements of Kathakali and explanation and demonstration of the dance form were presented to enlighten the audience.

The students expressed that it was a special privilege to witness what they had otherwise seen only on television.

Kalamandalam Amaljith has been working in the International Centre for Kathakali, New Delhi, as a teacher-cum-artiste since 2000.

He has performed extensively in India and several countries like USA, Thailand, Netherlands, Spain, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, etc. He has also performed at the Festival of India in Peru and Cuba in October 2013, Vietnam in March 2014, Azerbaijan in June 2014 and South Africa in July 2014.

Non-bonded nurses demand absorption

TURA: The 11 non-bonded nursing candidates who had applied for appointment through an advertisement issued in February 2013 by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS-MI), Shillong, against 180 vacant posts have demanded that all of them be absorbed into the nursing career as per the Job Reservation Policy.

According to the candidates, an examination was conducted on August 10 last year in which a total of 811 candidates appeared with only 11 belonging to the Garo community. When the result of the said examination was declared, out of the 399 candidates who passed the examination only five candidates from the Garo community were cleared for appointment.

The candidates felt that this was a deprivation of their rights as out of 180 vacant posts 72 seats should have been reserved for the Garo community if the government maintained the Job Reservation Policy. In the absence of 72 or more candidates to fill up the reserved seats, the available 11 Garo candidates should also have been absorbed and given appointments, the candidates said.

“Meghalaya Job reservation Policy states that Khasi-Jaintias and the Garos share 40 per cent seat reservation each in all Government Institutions. Not maintaining the Job Reservation Policy means hurting the Garo community,” the candidates said and appealed to local leaders, senior citizens, NGOs and the people of Garo Hills to fight the injustice.
