SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education, R.C. Laloo, on Monday inaugurated the Science Stream of Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District.
Speaking on the occasion, Laloo urged the students to work hard and make proper use of the facilities made available to them.
“Students need to develop a spirit of competitiveness to be able to be at par with other students in the major cities,” he said.
State Planning Board (SPB) Chairman S.C. Marak stressed on the need for quality education especially in rural areas of the State like Mawkyrwat.
He added that though the literacy rate of the State has risen to 74.4% yet a lot remained to be done to raise the literacy rate to a higher level.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Deputy Chief Minister and local legislator Rowell Lyngdoh, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner R. Lyngdoh, Director, School Education and Training Ambrose Ch. Marak.
