New Delhi: Jahnu Barua’s National Award winning Assamese film “Ajeyo” (Invincible), set in the pre-Independence era, will hit theatres in select cities Sep 19.

The acclaimed filmmaker is happy the film is getting a wide release.

“Ajeyo”, which was adjudged the Best Feature Film in Assamese at the 61st National Film Awards, will be releasing across screens in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore with English subtitles, courtesy PVR Directors’ Rare.

Talking about the development, Barua said in a statement: “I am very pleased with the wide release that ‘Ajeyo’ will be seeing due to PVR’s Director’s Rare initiative.”

Based on Sri Arun Sarma’s Sahitya Akademi Award winning Assamese novel “Ashirbador Rong”, the movie narrates the story of the struggles of an honest, ideal revolutionary youth.

It is set during the years of Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movement and the story builds up to 1947.

“The Independence phase was perhaps the most tumultuous period for our nation. In ‘Ajeyo’, we see this period of India’s history through the eyes of a young Indian revolutionary who refuses to be disillusioned, in spite of the social injustice prevalent around him,” added Barua.

The film’s producer Shankar Lall Goenka believes that “the dearth in meaningful cinema in India is being done away with” thanks to such initiatives by PVR Director’s Rare.

“Given the type of niche and deep cinema that is released under this banner, we feel ‘Ajeyo’ will be the perfect fit,” he said.

Sanjeev Kumar Bijli of PVR Ltd. is confident that like Barua’s previous works, “Ajeyo” too will strike a chord with the movie goers and critics. (IANS)
