Four youths remanded to police custody for extortion

Rangiya(Assam): Four youths were on Wednesday remanded to two days police custody for allegedly claiming to be journalists as well as members of different organisations and extorting money from people. Rangiya Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate Rana Dutta remanded the four youths to two days police custody when they were produced before him Wednesday after being taken into custody Tuesday night from the Hahara Seema Sashatra Bal (SSB) camp near here when they tried to enter the camp posing as journalists. The police had asked for four days of custody. The SSB authorities allegedly found their behaviour suspicious and began interrogating them following which they found a bag in their vehicle containing blank writing pads of different organisations and money receipts. The four youths were later handed over to the police and they alleged that the youths used the name of different organisations to extort money from people. Police claimed they had recovered money receipts from the youths suggesting they had extorted more than Rs ten lakh from different people. The youths have been identified as Mobidul Islam, Gobinda Ramchiary, Gautam Das and Anil Boro and all four hailed from Guwahati. (PTI)

Three Nagaland MLAs move court against disqualification order

Kohima:The three MLAs of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, who were disqualified by the Speaker on August 25, have filed a petition in the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court against the order. The three NCP MLAs, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr T M Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon, had switched sides to the BJP on June 16 last claiming to have fulfilled all the laid down provisions under the Tenth Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law of the Constitution. The first hearing was held Tuesday, but the court deferred its judgement as the counsels for the respondents sought permission of a few days to reply to the points submitted by the advocate of the plaintiffs. The next hearing has been fixed for Friday, official sources said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, senior Supreme Court lawyer and ex-MP Satya Pal Jain, who represented the three MLAs, termed the Assembly Speaker’s decision as “unconstitutional” and challenged the disqualification order issued on August 25. Assam government gives Rs 5 cr to flood-hit J-K

Guwahati: Assam Government has extended financial assistance of Rs 5 crore for the relief of flood-hit people of Jammu and Kashmir, spokesman of the Chief Minister Office (CMO) said here. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday directed officials that Rs five crore be given from the state government for the people affected by unprecedented flood in the northern state, the spokesman told PTI. Meanwhile, Assam’s Additional Director General of Police (Vigilance and Anti Corruption) Rajkumar Chandranathan has reached Jammu and Kashmir to render assistance to the people of Assam stranded in that state, the spokesman said. Chandranathan, who would be camping at Srinagar, has informed the state government here that there was no report of casualty of people from Assam so far, he said. A Control Room has been set up by the police to help people whose relatives are stranded in Jammu and Kashmir floods. The phone numbers of the Control Room are 0361-2381511, 2380620 and Superintendent of Police Ratna Singh, IPS is designated as the Nodal Officer with phone number 0361-2383093 (Office). The Control Room has received enquiries from family members of 121 personnel of various Government agencies working in J-K and also from family members of 46 tourists who are stranded there, the spokesman said. 661 committed suicide in Mizoram since 2005: NGO

Aizawl: At least 661 people including 112 women committed suicide in Mizoram since 2005 till date, Dr Zawmsanga Sailo of the Aizawl-based NGO New Life Charity Society (NELICS) said here on Wednesday. At a function held in the Pachhunga University College campus here on the occasion of the World Suicide Prevention Day, Sailo said the eldest person to commit suicide was 82-year-old and the youngest was eight years. He said an average 73 people committed suicide every year in the state and 63 people, including 19 women committed suicide since January till September nine this year. The highest incident of suicidal death in the state was in 2010 when at least 97 people including nine women committed suicide, he added. The function, sponsored by the National Health Mission, was organised by the Psychology department of the Pachhunga University College, the lone constituent college of the Mizoram University. (PTI)
