Finding a place for Motphran bridge vendors

SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has urged the State government to shift the Sweeper Lane or Harijan colony to Iew Mawlong.

“During my meeting with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday I told him that the shifting of the Sweeper Lane would pave away for construction of a permanent market to accommodate the local vendors and the hawkers who are selling second-hand clothes at Motphran bridge,” Basaiawmoit told reporters here on Thursday.

He said that he had told the Chief Minister that there should not be any problem while vacating the Sweeper Lane “since the Government has already constructed a permanent place for them (people of Sweeper Colony).”

“He (Chief Minister) suggested on the need to convene a joint meeting of the State Government, KHADC and Syiem of Mylliem to discuss the issue,” KHADC CEM said.

Informing that the whole area of the Sweeper Lane belong of the Hima Mylliem, he said that the Hima was also very much in favour of construction of the permanent market in the area.

When pointed out that the Congress might oppose this since the colony has always been its strong hold, he said that it would be unfortunate if there is an opposition only due to vote bank politics.

Meanwhile, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Thursday informed that the hawkers selling second-hand clothes at Mothphran bridge have agreed to ‘temporarily shift’ to the ground floor of the parking lot of Jaiaw Taxi Stand opposite Synod Complex near Mothphran.

Lyngdoh said this after her meeting with the members of the hawkers’ body — Synjuk ki Nongdie Jain Jingkieng Motphran (SKNJJM) — here on Thursday.
