TURA: The Farmers’ Association of Adokgre with representatives from 45 villages in North Garo Hills has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma urging him to look into the various grievances being faced by the people of the region.
One of issues raised by the farmers’ association in the memorandum was the closure of the Adokgre SBI Branch which was causing immense hardships to farmers and the general public alike. It said that the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana would be meaningless if the Adokgre SBI Branch remained close as it would not be able to meet the deadline of December 31, 2014 set by the Deputy Commissioner of the district for its implementation.
Concerned over the security in the region the association also appealed for the upgradation of the Meghalaya Anti Dacoity Camp located in the area to at least a Police Outpost.
With regard to road connectivity the association pointed out that the Rongjeng-Mangsang-Adokgre Road was the lifeline of several villages and the road would have been the shortest connecting road from Guwahati to Williamnagar and Baghmara.
“The road is not motorable at all during the rainy season. We farmers of Independent India are bearing the brunt due to total negligence of our past leaders,” the association said.
The association also said that it was not getting a favourable market for its agricultural produce. It claimed the farmers were not getting a reasonable price in turn for their sweat and urged the Chief Minister to look into their petitions and take necessary action at the earliest.
