Market complex construction to continue
NONGSTOIN: An official team of Assam Government led by Kamrup District Magistrate, also the Circle Officer of Boko, S. Goswami held a meeting with Meghalaya officials led by West Khasi Hills Extra Assistant Commissioner M.A. Challam at the construction site of Langpih market complex to discuss the attempt of the Assam Government to stop the ongoing construction of the market complex.
The three-hour long meeting witnessed heated debate by both sides when Goswami stated that there should not be construction of any permanent structure at disputed border areas and added that construction of the Langpih market complex was illegal.
On the other hand, Challam argued that the West Khasi Hills District Administration was maintaining the status quo agreement signed by the two Chief Ministers soon after the May 14, 2010 firing incident at Langpih market that both sides should develop their respective areas as far as possible.
Challam further reminded the Assam officials that the Government of Meghalaya did not object to construction of a market complex and community hall undertaken by the Assam Government.
Later, both the teams agreed to continue with developmental activities in Langpih without any interference by either state. The meeting also agreed that both Assam and Meghalaya should communicate to each other any proposal for developmental activity in Langpih.
“We have come to an understanding that the Langpih Market Complex will be completed as planned,” Challam informed after the meeting, adding that all unwanted developments taking place at Langpih would be reported to the Govt. of Meghalaya.
