ATM frauds: SBI issues advisory

SHILLONG: In the wake of the unending cases of ATM frauds being reported in the State, the State Bank of India has made it clear that it never asks for details of ATM cards from its customers over the phone.

A statement issued by the SBI appealed its customers not to respond to or reveal any information regarding ATM card/credit card/account number etc., to anybody over telephone or e-mail.

“Please ignore any telephone call that criminals and fraudsters may make, seeking such information,” the statement added.

Though the likes of online banking system and ATMs have made the life of customers easy, they have also given scope to miscreants to dupe people.

While many bank customers continue to fall prey to conmen who seek their ATM card details through phone calls, bank authorities are finding it difficult to come up with any full-proof mechanism to stop such instances.

The Shillong Police from time to time has issued advisories but to no avail as people keep falling prey to the racketeers.

Concerned over the growing instances of crime through the hi-tech banking systems, some people have also gone back to the conventional way of banking i.e. withdrawing and depositing money through signature.
