SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Sector has stressed on the need for greater deployment of troops along the Indo-Bangla border due to its porous nature.

According to a BSF official, the visibility in the porous borders of Meghalaya ranges from 40-50 yards due to the thick, hilly terrain and hence calls for greater deployment of forces.

The official also informed that around 60 per cent of the fencing work has been completed in the 446 km long Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya frontier. While the work in the Tura sector is almost complete, that of Shillong sector will take some time owing to the hilly terrain.

The BSF has so far deployed nine battalions in the Meghalaya sector. BSF has asked the Central Government to raise one more battalion to further improve border management.

Earlier, there were reports that GNLA commander-in-chief Sohan Shira had crossed over to Bangladesh.

Local residents have been for long opposing the Centre’s decision to erect the border fence 150 yards inside Zero Line along the Indo-Bangla border in Khasi and Jaintia Hills districts, while demanding fresh survey of the border area before fencing.
