India thrash Nepal 3-0 to rocket to men’s team quarters

INCHEON:India rocketed to the quarterfinals of men’s tennis team event after thrashing Nepal 3-0 in the 17th Asian Games here today.Yuki Bhambri and Sanam Singh eased past their opponents to seal the deal in India’s favour.Yuki crushed Jeetendra Pariyar in straight sets 6-0 6-0 without dropping a game, after Sanam Singh posted a comfortable 6-0 6-1 victory over Abhishek Bastola at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts.In the inconsequential doubles tie, the Indian duo of Divij Sharan and Saketh Myneni registered a comfortable straight sets 6-0 6-0 win over Santosh Khatri and Sonam Dawa, thrashing their opponents in only 35 minutes.The sixth seeded Indians will face top seeds Kazakhstan in their last-eight match. Kazakhstan defeated Hong Kong in their second round match 3-0.Yuki took just 37 minutes to polish off his hapless opponent while Sanam 40 minutes to see off Bastola, giving India an easy win. (UNI)

Taiwan, Kazakh weightlifters break world records

INCHEON: Kazakh weightlifter Zulfiya Chinshanlo broke her own clean and jerk world record in the 53kg category at the Asian Games today, but it was not enough to snatch gold from Taiwan’s Hsu Shu Ching, who also set a new combined world mark of 233kg.Chinshanlo had set the world record by lifting 131kg in 2012 on the way to becoming Olympic champion in London and bettered her mark by 1kg in Incheon.Hsu, who had finished runner-up to Chinshanlo two years ago, turned the tables on her by beating Li Ping’s combined mark of 230kg, set at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.Hsu lifted 101kg in the snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk.The records were the second and third to fall at the Games in Incheon after North Korea’s Om Yun Chol set a new mark in the men’s 56kg event yesterday. Dipika, Ghosal assure squash medals for India

Incheon: India’s growing dominance in squash was once again highlighted after World number 12 Dipika Pallikal assured India of its first ever women’s singles medal in the Asian Games, while Saurav Ghosal also sealed his third successive podium finish in men’s singles after the two reached the semifinals of their respective events here today.In a royal battle of countrywomen, Pallikal defeated her doubles partner Joshna Chinappa in marathon five games to advance to Women’s Singles Semi-finals.She won the quarterfinals match 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 15-17, 11-9. With this, Dipika assures herself a bronze medal at Asian Games 2014.The much-anticipated women’s match turned out to be a pulsating contest as expected. In a roller-coaster battle, Joshana clinched the opening game 11-7 in just nine minutes but Dipika bounced back to draw level.Dipika made it 14-13 before Joshana went up 15-14.(uni)

Student becomes master as South Korean downs his hero

INCHEON:South Korean student Kim Cheong-yong has idolised Olympic champion and world record holder Jin Jong-oh since first picking up a pistol in middle school.However, that did not stop the 17-year-old blowing his mentor away in the 10 metre air pistol final today to become the youngest shooter to win an Asian Games gold medal.Kim, who along with Jin and Lee Dae-myung also won gold in the team event, said his mentor still had so much to teach him despite proving the sharpest shot in Incheon.”I hope to continue my shooting career for a long time with Jin, who I respect a lot.”Kim told reporters he was still trying to get used to his new-found sporting fame after becoming South Korea’s first double gold medallist of the 17th Asiad.(Reuters)

Indian handball women tie, men lose

Incheon: The Indian handball contingent experienced a mixed Sunday at the Asian Games here with the women’s team forcing a come-from-behind 26-26 tie against Thailand while the men suffered a second straight defeat, going down 19-39 to hosts South Korea in their respective preliminary round matches.The men, having lost 20-39 against Chinese Taipei in the first match on Saturday, They are scheduled to face Japan in their third and final Group D match Monday.Later, the women were trailing 10-15 after the first half but rallied to equalise in the second session with a score of 16-11, forcing a tie in their Group A match at the Suwon Gymnasium.The women had lost 11-47 to hosts South Korea in their first match on Saturday. They will play their third and final match against China on Monday.(IANS)

India women thrashed 0-10 by Thailand in football

Incheon: Indian women rounded off their league encounters receiving a 0-10 thrashing from Thailand here Sunday in their third Group A match of the football competition in the Asian Games.Thailand dominated the proceedings right from the start and led 8-0 at interval at the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field. It was India’s second successive loss in the tournament by a similar margin.Four goals each from captain Sung Ngoen Kanjana and midfielder Boothduang Wilaiporn, and one each from substitutes Sornsai Pitasamai and Seesraum Naphat sealed the issue for Thailand in an one-sided encounter. Such was Thailand’s domination that they surged into a 2-0 lead within eight minutes of the match and breezed to a 6-0 lead by the half-hour mark.India felt the absence of captain Bembem Devi – suspended for the game for a double booking against South Korea(ians)

India thrash Sri Lanka 8-0 in hockey

Incheon:Rupinder Pal Singh smashed three goals to give India winning start in the 17th Asian Games as the men-in-blue thrashed Sri Lanka 8-0 in their opening encounter at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium here today.For India, other goal scorer were Ramandeep (2) and Raghunath, Chinglensana and Nikkin Thimmaiah scored each to give the much required setback to the opponent team.India started the third quarter by continuing their attack on Sri Lanka. The last quarter saw Rupinder scoring 2 back to back goals in the 45th and 46th min. (IANS)
