SHILLONG: After several years, the water level has reached its maximum limit at Umiam, forcing the authorities to release water from Umiam Dam on Monday.
Elias Lyngdoh, Director, Generation, MeECL, informed that water was released from the Umiam Reservoir from 1 pm and added that more water would be released depending on the situation.
Around 4 feet of water was released on Monday, he said.
Heavy rains have been lashing the State since Friday last and with the water level in reservoirs reaching its maximum levels across all the power projects, the power generation in the State has finally reached its optimum level.
Lyngdoh informed that the Umiam Hydro power project is now producing around 100 MW of power daily, but also pointed out that the ageing Stage 3 was not functioning.
He informed that MeECL is planning to renovate the Stage 3 which can generate 60 MW of power for which the State Power department has sought Rs. 350 crore from the Central Government for repair and renovation.
Though there is no shortage of power, thanks to the heavy rainfall, power generation has, however, been affected with snapped power lines being reported across the city.
