Flood situation: Govt had issued alerts

SHILLONG: The State Government has claimed that a heavy rain alert was issued to all Deputy Commissioners and evacuation of people from vulnerable areas had begun on Saturday morning even as food and shelter was being provided to those affected.

According to a Government statement, senior officials led by Acting Chief Secretary, BK Deb Verma, took steps to handle the flood situation in Garo Hills and the district administrations were duly instructed to take necessary actions in this regard.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary, PBO Warjri informed that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who was in New Delhi, also rushed back to the State to assess the situation.

After visiting the flood affected areas, the Chief Minister is scheduled to leave for Delhi on Wednesday for the signing of the Peace Settlement with the ANVC and ANVC-B, the statement added.

Warjri and Additional Chief Secretary, KS Kropha were also in Delhi where they attended a meeting convened by the Cabinet Secretary (Government of India) with regards to coal mining in Meghalaya.
