12 labourers mowed down by speeding vehicle; eight injured
MathurA: Twelve labourers including two women were killed while eight others injured after being mowed down by a speeding vehicle at the Kotban border in the district Tuesday, police said. The vehicle was coming from Agra and was on way to Delhi and the incident took place under the Kosi police station. “Eleven died in the incident first. And, three of the nine injured brought to the district hospital, owing to their serious conditions were rushed to S N Medical College in Agra, where one of them later succumbed,” Dy SP Atul Kumar Srivastava said. After rescue operation, the police rushed the injured to district hospital. District Magistrate B Chandrakala later rushed to district hospital and ensured proper treatment for the injured. “While the next kith and kin of the deceased will get Rs two lakh, every injured would be given Rs 50 thousand each”, she said. The accident occurred at about 4. 00 AM when the vehicle mowed down the labourers, who were waiting for the repair of their truck at roadside. The labourers worked at a brick kiln in Rajasthan and were and on their way to Hanumangarhi in Rajasthan, officials said, adding the driver and the cleaner absconded. (PTI)
Jaya announces Rs five lakh cash relief to family of fisherman
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday condoled the death of a fisherman from the state who was shot dead in Bahrain-Qatar border and ordered a cash relief of Rs five lakh to his family. T Karthikeyan of Ramanathapuram district, who was working in Bahrain on contract basis for the last four months, was shot dead allegedly by Qatar naval personnel while he was fishing in that nation’s waters on Sunday. Jayalalithaa expressed grief over his death and extended her sympathies with his family. In a statement Jayalalithaa said she had directed that the relief amount of Rs five lakh be paid from the Chief Minister’s General Relief Fund. (PTI)
Ensure 22 hours power in cities, 16 in villages: UP CM to dept
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday directed the power department to take steps to ensure that electricity is supplied for 22 hours in urban and 16 hours in rural areas by 2016. He asked the department to work on production, transmission and distribution fronts at a review meeting, Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said. “The chief minister has directed to work on production, transmission and distribution to ensure 22 hours power supply in urban and 16 hours in rural areas by 2016 as promised by him,” Ranjan told reporters after the meeting. Yadav was told that by 2016 the power demand will touch 23,000 MW and to ensure the promised power supply, power production of 21,000 MW will be needed, he said. To achieve the target, power transmission segment will need Rs 22,500 crore while Rs 15,000 crore for distribution, Ranjan said, adding that the CM has directed Finance and Power department officers to generate resources for it. Woman killed by leopard
Dehradun: A woman was killed by a leopard in Maletha village of Pauri district, forest department sources said here on Tuesday. 38-year-old Guddi Devi was attacked by the big cat hiding in the bushes yesterday when she was going to the forest to collect fodder along with some of her companions. She was dragged for about 200 metres by the leopard when her companions raised an alarm. Residents of the village are demanding that the leopard be declared a man eater and shot dead. (PTI)
