Shillong Abattoir project set to be functional by Dec

SHILLONG: The completion of the Rs.22 crore Shillong Abattoir project is likely to be completed by December.

“We are trying to make the slaughter house operational tentatively within December. The implementation of the project is in its final stages,” official sources said here on Wednesday.

Asked about effluents which would be release from the slaughter house, the officials assured that the department has taken cognizance of the matter and assured that effluents would not be release outside the premises of the slaughter house.

“We have constructed a number of ponds for the purpose of releasing liquid wastes from the slaughter house; besides a treatment plant is also in place to treat the waste water to be used for domestic purposes and which will also be converted into fish ponds,” the officials said.

With regards to solid waste, the officials said that the department has decided to set up a plant which will convert solid waste into fertilizers.

The officials, further, informed that the department has also held meetings with several association and meat sellers from across the State and sought their support and cooperation by urging them to make use of the slaughter house.

The abattoir would have a capacity of 160 large animals, 240 pigs and 240 small animals (goats) per day.

It may be mentioned that the slaughter house is being constructed by the Rapsang Group of Companies and Real Growth Company, Chennai.
