Purno plays host, meet reiterates statehood demand

SHILLONG: A meeting of opposition parties, held at the residence of Purno Sangma recently, has resolved to demand statehood for Garo people.

The meeting further resolved to oppose any attempt of diluting the Garo customary law in the name of codification by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

There was also a demand for the inclusion of other militant groups like GNLA, ASAK, UALA and other actively operating outfits of Garo Hills in the next round of peace settlement

The leaders of all political parties, who attended the meeting, expressed resentment over the ‘unconstitutional extension’ of the term of MDCs of GHADC and resolved to oppose the government decision to defer the election of the GHADC.

Besides PA Sangma, Garo National Council Supremo and MLA of Chokpot Clifford R. Marak, United Democratic Party, Joint Secretary Santosh Marak,MDCs, MLAs, EX MLAs and ex-MDCs of the various political parties and members of BJP attended the meeting.
