Two injured in blast, villagers assaulted by troops

IMPHAL: Two persons were injured in a bomb blast at Muirei village, Imphal East, today.

Assam Rifles personnel took away five persons and beat up and arrested two others working in the area, police said, adding they were rushed to the JN Hospital and stated to be out of danger.

When the area was searched it was found that an IED could have been planted earlier and detonated from a distance. The bomb was planted near the main road and covered with grass.

Additional police force was rushed in and investigation carried out.

The injured were identified as Birachandra(72) and Asobanta(45).

Troops of 16 Assam Rifles were on foot patrol during the blast but none was injured. Later they went on a rampage and arrested the duo working in the field and beat them up. Five persons were also taken away by the AR personnel. Residents of the area came out and demanded release of those arrested. (UNI)
