ARPA elects Adelbert Nongrum as its new leader

SHILLONG: KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum is all set to become the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KHADC.

Nongrum, an MDC from Jaiaw, was unanimously elected as the new leader of the ruling coalition in the Council -ARPA– during a meeting of the three allies here on Monday.

Nongrum will replace Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, who put in his papers recently.

Informing this to newsmen after the meeting, UDP president Donkupar Roy said, “We have unanimously elected Nongrum as the new leader of the ARPA after HSPDP refused the lead the coalition”.

Appreciating KHNAM for accepting the responsibility to lead the coalition, he assured that this kind of crisis would not crop up in the near future.

“There should not be any doubt on the commitment of the all three allies to see that the ARPA completes its full term,” Roy said.

He informed that the three coalition partners have decided to constitute an unofficial core committee to guide and advise the Executive Committee (EC) and added that the MDCs will not be members of this committee.

A letter on the latest in KHADC will be submitted to Governor Dr KK Paul shortly.

KHNAM, meanwhile, decided not to seek a written assurance from UDP and HSPDP on their support to lead the Council. Nongrum, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to take up the new responsibility.

The KHNAM MDC said that his main goal would be to ensure a healthy working relationship among the MDCs of the ruling coalition.

Meanwhile, HSPDP president Hoping Stone Lyngdoh has denied that there was a division in his party over leading the council. Interestingly, besides Basiawmoit, two other HSPDP MDCs — Teilinia Thangkhiew and Pyniaid N Syiem and KHNAM MDC Latiplang skipped Saturday’s meeting.

“All the four MDCs have assured their support to any decision taken in this meeting,” Roy added.

Meanwhile, KHADC chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew has forwarded the resignation letter of Basaiawmoit to the Governor on Monday.
