A pipeline to ferry 6,000 litres of beer every hour!
London: A brewery in the city of Bruges in Belgium has come up with a unique plan to shift all the frothy beer from their old factory to new factory for filtration, bottling and shipping – via an underground beer pipeline!
The city council has approved the De Halve Maan brewery’s clever plan to save time and money while reducing emissions and congestion that the city faces as the beer is shifted currently via trucks.
Now, the beer will flow through a 2.8 km polyethylene pipeline, making the trip in 15 to 20 minutes, wired.com reported.
The pipeline will move 6,000 litres of beer every hour.
The brewery will cover the installation and road repair costs.
“This innovative investment plan would reduce the amount of transport by heavy goods vehicles by 85 percent,” Franky Dumon from the city council was quoted as saying. (IANS)
Five people saved by 3-year-old organ donor
Beijing: Five people in China are in stable condition after undergoing heart, liver, kidney and cornea transplants with organs donated by a three-year-old girl who died last week, doctors said Monday.
The donor, Liu Jingyao from Jiangxi province, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour earlier this year, Xinhua reported.
Her parents visited multiple hospitals in several cities, but each doctor said the condition was too late to be cured.
The girl’s head swelled and she began to have trouble speaking, eventually becoming confined to the bed.
Her father, Liu Xiaobao discussed the possibility of donating her organs after persuading other family members about the difficult decision.
“The word ‘donation’ was difficult for her to understand, so I tried to explain that if we would give something from her body, she could save the lives of others. She agreed to this,” Liu Xiaobao said.
The girl’s physical condition deteriorated earlier last week and she died Sep 23.
Her organs were soon removed for transplantation.
“She was too young and some of the organs were very small. But we were able to transplant her kidneys into one patient. Her heart, liver and corneas were given to four other patients, respectively,” a doctor said. (IANS)
German firm launches drone delivery service
London: German delivery firm DHL Parcel has announced the world’s first drone delivery service.
“DHL Parcel will soon launch a unique pilot project on the North Sea island of Juist,” the company said in a statement.
“For the first time worldwide, medications and other urgently needed goods will be delivered to the island (Juist) at certain times of the day by DHL ‘parcelcopter’,” the company added.
“The flight route to the island of Juist is roughly 12 km. The flight will be completely automated for the first time. This means that a pilot does not have to take any action at all during any phase of the flight,” the statement said.
The “parcelcopter” will take off from the harbour in Norddeich.
The drone can carry loads of up to 1.2 kg. The drone itself weighs 5 kg, according to DHL.
Once the drones land at Juist, the parcels (secured in a lightweight, weatherproof case) will be delivered to their recipients by a human courier.
For now, the company will be using the drones only when other delivery options are not available, and no plans are currently in the works to incorporate the parcelcopters into normal day-to-day deliveries, according to company officials. (IANS)
