Relief pouring in for flood, landslide victims in GH

TURA: Support from the general public and local groups and NGOs for the victims of last week’s tragedy has been overwhelming as members of the public including young school children answering to the distress call and stepping forward to help.

Ever since news of the devastation was made known in Garo Hills, small groups of people, mostly young boys and girls, have been collecting clothes, books, food items and other materials to dispatch to the affected areas and members of the public have been coming forward and contributing in cash as well.

Several schools in Garo Hills have been receiving toys, clothes, notebooks and other materials contributed by their students for the affected people.

The support and help for the victims has not been confined to the Garo Hills region alone.

Members of church communities as far away as Siliguri in West Bengal, like the Rays of Hope Church, are reportedly en route to North Garo Hills bringing with them school notebooks, instrument boxes, school bags, umbrellas among other items to provide for the school children who lost everything.

“The North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP) along with teams from the Indian Red Cross, KASA and ADRA-India relief organizations are arriving with relief material to contribute to the relief operations with the government,” informed relief workers from Resubelpara.

A cement company operating in the state, MAX Cement of the Green Valley Industries Limited, has dispatched a truck load of relief material including T-shirts, blankets, mosquito nets, mineral water, utensils and food items to the Garo Hills region.
