SHILLONG: The first day of Durga Puja in Shillong got off amidst the 24-hour bandh called the proscribed HNLC on Wednesday.

The shutdown, which began at 6 pm on Wednesday, failed to evoke any response in the city, but it had a partial impact in the outskirts.

Shops remained open till late night and vehicles plied normally. People visited puja pandals in large numbers.

Earlier, the HNLC had exempted puja celebrations from the purview of the bandh.

However, in the outskirts especially areas like Mawblei, shops downed their shutters exactly at 6 pm. No impact…

(Contd from P-1) Stringent security measures and heavy deployment of police personnel were seen in different parts of the city.

In the day time, the city witnessed huge traffic jam since people came out in large numbers for their last minute shopping in view of the bandh.
