SHILLONG: Officials and volunteers of Central Puja Committee (CPC) undertook the task of cleaning the immersion ghat located at Wah Umkhrah in Polo from early Sunday morning.

All wooden frames of idols and other materials were meticulously removed from the river by the volunteers assisted by JCVs and stacked on the bank systematically following which they were transported to the dumping ground by SMB trucks.

It was ensured that minimum materials are carried downstream. This operation is undertaken every year before and after immersion of Durga idols.

“The responsibility of the CPC has further increased by virtue of being a member organization of “Save Wah Umkhrah & Umshyrpi” Task Force. Accordingly, in addition to removal of accumulated materials after immersion, the buildup of soil, plastic and other debris adjacent to the Ghat since several years was also removed.

“Moreover, minor dredging both up and down stream of the Ghat by JCVs was also carried out,” Naba Bhattacharjee, President, CPC said.
