Memorandum on flood damages ready: Official

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will leave for Delhi likely on October 14 to seek fund from the Centre for the restoration works of the flood-affected areas of the State especially in Garo Hills.

The State Government is projecting around Rs 1500 crore as loss and a demand for the same amount will be made when the Chief Minister meets the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the Central government officials in Delhi, an official source said on Thursday.

The State Government has already prepared a memorandum in this regard to be submitted to the Home Minister.

There was delay in the submission of memorandum since the Union Minister and others are busy due to the upcoming elections, according to the state government.

However, during the visit of the Union Home Minister to Garo Hills, the State Government failed to provide any detailed memorandum regarding the flood situation unlike Assam Government.

During his visit, the Union Minister had asked Meghalaya Government to use the State Disaster Relief Fund worth Rs over 120 crore for the relief works pending financial assistance from the Centre.

The State Government will ask money under National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) and the amount will be spent for temporary relief works.

The State Government will also seek a special package for the permanent restoration works especially for the restoration of assets lost, construction of roads, water supply and irrigation.
