Marriage Registration Act

SHILLONG: A day after the Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM) slammed State Government for the delay in framing rules for the implementation of the Marriage Registration Act, the latter has clarified that the draft rules for the same were placed before the Cabinet, which, upon their examination, directed the concerned department to further fine tune the rules before placing them for final approval.

The State Government, while assuring that the rules would be finalized and notified soon, has called upon the MSM to desist from taking recourse to agitation.

Meanwhile, the Under Secretary to the Excise, Registration, Taxation and Stamps department also clarified that the department has completed the exercise in consultation with other relevant departments and the issue of placing the draft rules before the Cabinet for its consideration and approval is being taken up.

The Under Secretary also said that while the entire process has taken sometime to be completed, the sincerity of the Government to take the matter forward should not be questioned.

Earlier, MSM convener, Michael Syiem had called for immediate implementation of the Act in view of the growing number of broken families in the State. Besides, he had also demanded that the rules which have already been framed by the concerned departments and placed before the Mukul Sangma-led Cabinet for approval should be cleared at the earliest to pave way for implementation of the Act.
