Governor summons Mizoram Assembly from November 11

Aizawl: Mizoram governor Krishan Kant Paul on Friday summoned the winter session of the Mizoram legislature to commence from November 11, additional secretary of the state assembly S R Zokhuma said.Zokhuma told PTI that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) chaired by the Speaker Hiphei would soon hold a meeting to chalk out detailed programme of the coming session. State Finance department officials said that Finance minister Lalsawta was likely to present the full state budget during the winter session even as the state plan outlay for the current fiscal was yet to be allocated. The officials said that the estimates of the scheme of financing for the current financial year (2014-15) had become clearer enabling them to prepare the budget estimates even as there were hardly four months during the current year. Lalsawta had seek vote-on-account for two times – in March and July – due to non-finalisation of the state plan size by the centre. (pti)

Arunachal Minister urges farmers to continue agriculture

Itanagar: Terming Kitpi area as the rice bowl of Tawang district, Tourism, Art & Culture Minister Pema Khandu has appealed the villagers not to forsake agriculture but to go for cash crop cultivation by adopting modern methods of agriculture. The minister was addressing a developmental meeting after inaugurating the circle office and a secondary school at Kitpi yesterday, an official communiqué informed here today. Insisting on preservation and promotion of rich culture and tradition, he said, “Every one of us both old and young should learn Bhoti language in order to understand, preserve and promote our culture and heritage better”. He stressed the need for special Bhoti language class all in the line of adult education programme. He also informed the huge gathering that His Holiness Dalai Lama has accepted to visit Tawang, West Kameng & other parts of the state in 2015. Khandu also congratulated the villagers for having a full-fledged circle office with regular CO and staff to attend to their works. He stressed on education of the younger generation and exhorted the villagers to be more responsible parents in imparting value-based education to the coming generation. (pti)

Emphasis on awareness on mental diseases

Kohima: Observation of World Mental Health Day in Nagaland today emphasised on the need to conduct more programmes to create awareness on mental diseases so that stigma attached to it could be curbed. “There is a need to create awareness on social acceptance of mental diseases because unless awareness is created among the people, the stigma attached to mental diseases would continue,” said Dr G Kemp, Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare Department, Nagaland while addressing a programme marking the day at State Mental Health Institute here. He also said that we need to work together for better treatment and better facilities. Speaking on the theme of the observation, “Living with Schizophrenia” Dr P Ngully dwelled on the signs and symptoms of schizophrenic patients. He said that there should be empathy towards the sufferers and that family participation should be an integral part during treatment of schizophrenic patients. “Schizophrenia is a manageable disease and awareness should prevail among all concerned,” he said. ACS urges Centre to resolve China visa issue

Itanagar: Arunachal Civil Society (ACS) has pleaded Centre to evolve a mechanism to resolve the contentious stapled visa issue with China. In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yesterday, ACS demanded immediate initiatives for regular visa especially to the sports personalities from Arunachal Pradesh to participate in international event, a press release said here today. ACS also demanded the Centre to come clear on the present status of the stapled visa issue. The memorandum, a copy of which was made available to the Press further said that the sports department must give priority in sending the sports personalities from Arunachal Pradesh to any international sports event, especially in China. Three BDFM ultras surrender to AR in Tripura

Agartala: Three insurgents of Bru Democratic Front of Mizoram (BDFM) on Saturday surrendered to Assam Rifles at Khedacherra, a village near Mizoram border in Tripura’s North District, the police said on Friday. “The ultras surrendered with three sophisticated rifles which included two Chinese rifles. They were active in the border areas of Tripura and Mizoram,” Superintendent of Police (North Tripura) Abhijit Saptarshi told reporters. Saptarshi said the ultras were identified as Kishan Reang, L L Reang and Walwal Reang. (PTI)

14 injured in fight over disputed land in Assam

Assam: At least 14 persons were injured, including six seriously, in a fight between two groups over a disputed land at Tupamari village in Kamrup Rural district.According to police officials, the land is a graveyard for the Muslim community donated by Abdul Shahid some years ago. After his demise, his three sons wanted the land back, which led to recurring tension with other villagers. This morning, when the three sons and some of their accomplishes tried to forcefully occupy the land, the people residing around the graveyard opposed it. This resulted in a fight between the two groups in which at least 14 persons were injured. The police said that six were critically injured and were sent to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for treatment, while the rest were being treated at the local health centre.Senior police officials said a a temporary police picket would be posted at the village.
