Fissure in KHADC coalition
SHILLONG: In a surprise development, HSPDP MDC (Sohryngkham) Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Monday resigned from the post of the Deputy Chairman of the KHADC.
Syiem submitted his resignation letter to the Council chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew.
The HSPDP Sohryngngam took this decision protesting UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh greeting Adelbert Nongrum on the day he assumed charge as the CEM (October 8).
While talking to newsmen after submitting his resignation letter, Syiem, without naming the UDP working president, said that he did not like what he had happened on October 8.
“An outsider, who had no connection with the Council, coming and greeting Nongrum after being elected as the CEM is not acceptable,” Syiem, who is close to former CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, said.
“I have a strong suspicion that some outside forces are responsible for the fall of the EC led by Basaiawmoit,” Sohryngkham MDC said while referring to a photograph which appeared in a section of the media which showed the UDP working president giving a bouquet to the newly elected CEM at his chamber on the day of his election.
“I initially believed that it was the UDP MDCs who were responsible for the ouster of Basaiawmoit,” he said adding “now it is confirmed that people from outside played pivotal role in this political mess.”
When asked whether he was referring to the UDP working president, he said that the people were intelligent enough to understand whom he was referring to.
According to him the post of the deputy chairman was never supposed to be taken by the HSPDP.
“The post of the deputy chairman actually was allotted to the KHNAM when the ARPA was formed,” Syiem said adding KHNAM, however, refused to take the post which was then offered to the UDP, which also rejected.
Syiem said, “It is due to unwillingness of the two coalition partners to take up the post, the HSPDP had to fill in.”
“I have accepted this post after both the KHNAM and UDP refuse to accept it,” the Sohryngkham MDC said.
He also said that the newly elected CEM (Nongrum) should not have included Nongshkhen independent MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri as the Executive Members (EMs) since it is an Executive Committee (EC) of the three regional parties under the umbrella of ARPA.
