Disgruntlement rocks ruling coalition in KHADC

SHILLONG: Nothing seems to be going right within the ruling coalition in KHADC even as the newly-appointed CEM Adelbert Nongrum has threatened to quit “if the present stalemate over the formation of EC does not come to an end immediately.”

“My stand to continue with the same team (previous Executive Committee) has been greeted with opposition from several quarters. I will not like to continue as the CEM if the stalemate does not end immediately,” Nongrum said after a meeting of ARPA, which has been rescheduled for Wednesday, on Tuesday.

The CEM was disappointed with the sudden decision of the Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem to resign as the Deputy Chairman.

“I shall request Syiem to withdraw his resignation,” Nongrum said.

According to him, he did not see any justification in inducting a new Executive Member (EM) in the EC “since the original demand was change of leadership.”

He said that if there is any need to induct a fresh EM in the EC then they should have officially written to him about this.

“During the meeting to decide on the EMs for the new EC, I had made my decision to retain the previous team known to both the Parliamentary Party (PP) leaders of HSPDP and UDP KP Pangniang and Teiñwell Dkhar respectively and everyone present in the meeting endorsed my proposal,” the KHADC CEM said.

Earlier, the Sohryngkham MDC, who resigned as the Deputy Chairman on Monday, had questioned Nongrum for inducting Nongshken independent MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri as the EM.

The HSPDP had wanted that the party MDC from Mawshynrut Morningstar Mawsor should be inducted in place of Kharpuri.

“I have decided to convene an emergency meeting of ARPA on Wednesday since the three MDCs of HSPDP Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, Teilinia Thangkhiew and Pyniaid Sing Syiem did not attend today’s meeting. I want that this problem is resolved once and for all during tomorrow’s meeting,” Nongrum said.

He said: “I will relinquish my post if there is no solution to this problem. I am ready to hand over the leadership back to the HSPDP for the sake of survival of ARPA”.

Pointing out that he had earlier sacrificed the EM post, Nongrum said that he would not hesitate to do the same if the situation demands.

“My priority is not this chair. My mission has always to serve the people,” the CEM said.

To a question whether there is political game being played against him, he said that the people who are playing such kind of politics will give a better reply to this question.
