SHILLONG: With the defeat of the Congress-NCP Government in Maharashtra, Meghalaya is now the only remaining state with a ruling Congress-NCP tie up.
Two NCP legislators – Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai (South Shillong) and Marthon Sangma (Mendipathar) – are supporting the Congress-led MUA-II coalition government which has the support of 29 Congress members and eleven independents.
One of the architects of the NCP, P.A. Sangma had parted ways to form the NPP. Purno’s daughter Agatha Sangma was the NCP MP from Tura till the recent Lok Sabha polls.
In the changed political scenario in Maharashtra, the future of the Congress- NCP relation in Meghalaya remains to be seen. NCP chief Sharad Pawar has already offered his party’s support to the BJP to form the next government in Maharashtra.
However, in case the BJP takes the support of the NCP and the party withdraws from the MUA-II coalition in Meghalaya, the Mukul Sangma-led government would not be affected since the Government enjoys a majority with the support of eleven Independents.
