Black flag march condemns rape of minor in Mawkyrwat

MAWKYRWAT: Thousands of people from different parts of South West Khasi Hills district on Monday took to the street to participate in the ‘Black Flag March’ to protest and condemn against rape of a three-and-half-year-old girl at Mawkyrwat on October 13 by an unknown person.

School and college students, teachers, shop keepers, Seng Longkmie , VDPs, Pressure Groups, Synjuk ki Myntri Shnong and the Chief of Hima Maharam resorted to ‘Black Flag March’ as a mark of protest.

The participants carried placards with different slogans like “rapists should be condemned to death”, “we condemn the rapist, hang him to death”, “stop rape – government please set up Fast Track Court and maximum punishment against perpetrator”, “bring justice, kill the rapist”, and others .

Speaking in the meeting, the chief of Hima Maharam, Paiem Niandro Syiemiong, who himself took part in the rally from Nativity Higher Secondary School to Mawkyrwat market, said that he was angered by the incident and termed the rapist as “devil”.

“The culprit should be hanged because it is not only a “rape case”, but it is an attempt to murder a child,” Paiem said.

All the speakers in the meeting including the local MDC, Hadrian Lyngdoh, representatives from Seng Longkmie, teachers, Synjuk Rangbah Shnong, VDPs, FKJGP, HYC, SSSS and others, urged people to go to the police and reveal the name and identity of the rapist so that he can be punished according to the law of the land.
