Agartala: Bimal Chakraborty, a Tripura Civil Service officer, has been suspended for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore scam at Bishalgarh block in newly created Sipahijala district, official sources said on Monday.

Chakraborty, who was Block Development Officer (BDO) of Bishalgarh block, has been suspended for his alleged hand in misappropriation of fund amounting to Rs 17 crore, said an official of General Administration (GA) here.

Based on a special audit report indicting misappropriation of MGNREGA fund at Bishalgarh block for the past one-and-a-half years, an FIR was lodged against 12 officers and employees including the then BDO Bimal Chakraborty in September 19.

After receiving substantial evidence, Chakraborty was suspended to pave the way for investigation into the multi-crore scam, the official said. The suspension paves the way for undertaking departmental proceeding against the officer, who was Deputy Director of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA).

Congress on Monday said it would file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the high court demanding CBI probe into the scam.

Opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman said, “A senior advocate of West Bengal would move the PIL on October 27. The investigating agency is not getting required help from the administration. The issue of search warrant is also being delayed to conceal the truth. Only CBI sleuths can unearth the truth,” Roy Barman said. (PTI)
