9 killed in bus mishap

GUWAHATI: Nine persons were killed and 25 others injured when the bus they were travelling in plunged into a roadside gorge filled with water at Naltoli in Nagaon district of Assam on Sunday morning.

Superintendent of Police, A Kalita informed that the bus belonging to Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) was coming to Guwahati from Lakhimpur en route to some north Indian places of pilgrimage including Kashi, Gaya and Vrindaban. The bus fell into the gorge after breaking railings on a bridge while trying to overtake another vehicle.

The driver of the bus and eight other passengers including a couple, one doctor, and one teacher were killed. The injured included a 4-month-old baby. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ordered the state transport secretary to institute an inquiry into the mishap and promised compensation to deceased and injured as per government norms.
