Second unit of Myntdu-Leshka hydel project to generate 280 MW of power

SHILLONG: With the successful completion of Stage 1 of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric Project (MLHEP), ground works have now begun for Stage 2 of the ambitious project.

MeECL Senior Engineer, Elias Lyngdoh, on Sunday informed that Stage 2 of the MLHEP will comprise of four units and once commissioned it would generate 280 MW of power.

State 1 of the project, which is producing 126 MW of power, was inaugurated in 2012.

Lyngdoh informed that the process of investigation for Stage 2 was in its final stages and would be completed by March next.

The MeECL was awaiting financial support from the North Eastern Council to undertake a drilling work which is a part of the investigation process, Lyngdoh said, while adding that after the investigation part is over, other formalities such as public hearing and necessary clearances would be completed.

“If everything goes according to plan, the project can kick off within two years,” the MeECL Engineer said.

It is expected that construction of Stage 2 of MLHEP would be a cheaper affair as most of the infrastructure is already available from Stage 1.
