SHILLONG: The KHADC with the support of the office of the Syiem of Mylliem on Thursday distributed uniforms to porters operating at Iewduh, the oldest traditional market in the region.
“We have introduced the uniforms for the safety of the people who come to the market. We would like ensure that people hire only those porters who have been recognized by the Syiem of Mylliem to prevent any kind of thefts,” KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum said during the uniform distribution programme.
KHADC EM in charge of Labour, James Ban Basaiawmoit, said that in the past several cases had been reported where goods were stolen by people who were hired to carry the load.
“With the introduction of the uniforms the possibility of goods being stolen has been minimized. The porters will not dare to do any such thing since they could easily be identified,” Basaiawmoit said.
Two varieties of uniforms – one for local porters with word ‘K’ (Khasi) imprinted on it and another with the word ‘NT’ (Non Tribal) – were distributed among the porters.
It has been informed that out of the 500 plus porters operating in Iewduh, 232 are non tribals.
