Hundreds including CM run for peace and harmony

SHILLONG: Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma joined the nearly 700 people in the “Run for Peace and Harmony” which he also flagged off at Fire Brigade here on Friday.

The run was organized by East Khasi Hills District Administration in collaboration with Sports and Youth Affairs Department to mark the Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas (National Re-dedication Day) and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).

Apart from the Chief Minister, Urban Affairs Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Health and Family Welfare Minister, AL Hek, Parliamentary Secretary Limison Sangma, former MLA Francis Pondit Sangma and East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Sanjay Goyal joined the runners comprising mostly of students from city-based schools and colleges. Later, the participants gathered at Polo Ground for the official function to mark the day. The Chief Minister led the gathering in the pledge to re-dedicate oneself to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation.

In his brief address prior to the pledge, the Chief Minister recollected the lives of two great leaders of the country, former Prime Minister of India, Late Indira Gandhi whose death anniversary is marked as Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas and first Union Home Minister, Late Sardar Vallabhai Patel, whose birth anniversary has been marked as the first Rashtriya Ekta Diwas tis year.

The Chief Minister along with Ampareen Lyngdoh and AL Hek gave away the prizes to the winners of the Run.

Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas also observed at the DC Office campus in Nongstoin. The programme was chaired by S.Warjri, Extra Assistant Commissioner West Khasi Hills District.

The West Jaintia Hills District Administration too observed the Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas in Jowai on Friday. The observation began with an open marathon conducted by the office of the District Sports Officer, West Jaintia Hills District.
