Guwahati:Over 130 performers from North East and other parts of country will dance to the tune of folk music at the ongoing cultural festival by NEZCC organised in the backdrop of recent violence against people from the region in rest of India.

The five-day long ‘Discover North East’ festival by North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) under Ministry of Culture which began on October 29, has been conceptualised and is being organised in the state capital keeping in view the enchanting and colourful culture of the region that deserves higher appreciation and respect.

The main attraction of the festival is the choreographed folk dance and music show on November 1 and 2, featuring more than 130 performing artistes in the same stage from the entire North East and they will be joined by performers from other parts of the country.

This special programme will be choreographed by noted artiste Prashanna Gogoi.

Talking about the festival, NEZCC Director Lipokmar Tzudir said, “Before we can stand united outside, we, the diversified people of the North East, must understand each other in a better way and strengthen the bond amongst us.”

The need of the hour is to showcase the best of the North East way of life, which needs to be realised first within the region and then the same needs to be taken forward to the rest of the country to garner respect and appreciation, it added.

One of the highlights of the festival is the national crafts and cuisine mela being orgainsed at the venue.

Renowned mime artiste Moinul Haque and magician Vikram Talukdar have also performed at the festival.

The festival has already taken place in Nagaland and Sikkim, while it will be held in Meghalaya next month.

Talukdar said the Guwahati chapter of the cultural extravaganza will be an annual affair from now on. (PTI)
