SHILLONG: Along with the rest of the country, IIM Shillong observed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to mark Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s 139th Birth Anniversary on Friday.

On the occasion, Director of IIM Shillong, Dr. Amitabha De administered the National Unity Pledge.

“Patel, who is commonly known as the Iron Man of India is being seen as a national symbol of Unity and hence the day is celebrated as the National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas,” Dr De said.

The pledge was followed by a discourse delivered by Prof. Abhijit Choudhury, retired Head of Department of History of St. Edmund’s College.

Choudhury explained the importance of recording even the smallest historical events and efforts of the unheard freedom fighters which have gone into achieving our freedom.

Meanwhile, the NSS, under the aegis of Union Christian College (UCC) WE CARE, Environmental Club, Students Representative Council and the college authority under the leadership of Vice Principal Dr. ED Karunakaran organized various events to observe the Rashtriya Ekta Divas on Friday. The programme kicked off with a cleaning drive, followed by a Run for Unity.
