SHILLONG: PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday claimed that the repair work of National Highway 44 was going on in full swing and the highway would be fully repaired by Christmas.
He informed that an amount of over Rs.24 crore has been sanctioned for repair of the arterial highway.
“I have also directed officers of the department to continuously inspect the road,” he informed news persons on Wednesday.
The highway which connects Meghalaya with Assam and other neighbouring states has been in a dilapidated state for years now.
The existing repair work is supplementary to the NHAI project of upgradation of the existing highway to a two-lane road with paved shoulders on either side.
The total cost of the project is Rs.368.88 crore that includes Rs.2.28 crore for environmental costs and Rs.9.17 crore for shifting of utilities, land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation.
The expansion work of NH-44 had been approved under Phase III of the National Highway Development Programme.
