NHRC registers complaint in EJH police firing case

JOWAI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a complaint in the death of two civilians in the police firing at Mookhep village in East Jaintia Hills District on September 24.

The NHRC has registered the case following a complaint lodged by the All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation,” its president M.H. Dkhar informed here on Wednesday.

Two persons – Derestmon Siangshai (23) and Setlang Phawa (36) – were killed in police firing during the economic strike sponsored by the Meghalaya Indigenous People’s rights and Livelihood in protest against the NGT ban on coal mining in Meghalaya.

The AJYWO had lodged a complaint with NHRC Chairperson, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, on September 28.
