Cottonian Gorkha Unit ‘Vetghat’ held

Kolkata:The Cotton College Unit of All Assam Guwahati Students’ Union organised its maiden freshmen social ‘Romailo Vetghat’ with a daylong programme at the College in Guwahati. Around 200 Gorkha Students of Cotton College gathered on Thursday to celebrate being Cottonian. Mr Nanda Kirati Dewan, senior leader of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Mr Ganga Powdel, member and co-ordinator of Gorkha Development Council (GDC), Government of Assam, spoke on the occasion, according to All Assam Gorkha Students Union sources here. Dr Narayan Chhetri and Dr Mina Kumari Devi, senior lecturers of Cotton College, addressed the youths as special guests. Cotton College Students Union general secretary Dip Jyoti Das and vice-president Abhijit Moran were also present. Ravi Sonar president of Cotton College Gorkha Students’ Unit spoke about the story behind the existence of AAGSU unit in the college and acknowledged the support of Guwahati City AAGSU, specially its general secretary Resham Sharma and Mr Dewan.Later, cultural troupes of the college performed and freshers were introduced to the seniors, the sources said. Minor brutally raped and murdered in Manipur

Imphal:An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her 24-year-old neighbour in Manipur’s Imphal West district following which the villagers attacked the accused leaving him seriously injured. Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday in interior Tharoijam Maning Leikai area when the girl was sent by her aunt to deliver tea to her mother who was working at a nearby paddy field.On the way, the girl was intercepted by her neighbour identified as Chingangbam Samjai (24) who allegedly raped her before strangulating her, police said. When the girl did not return from the field, her family started a hunt. Local residents rushed to their aid and when the youths of the village were questioned, the needle of suspicion pointed to Samjai, police said. He was later rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital here where his condition was stated to be serious, police said. The villagers lodged an FIR against Samjai at the local police station on Thursday. Police said they were investigating the matter. (PTI)

Primary school teacher arrested on charges of sexual abuse

Aizawl:A primary school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing 32 students in Champhai district of Mizoram, a police officer said on Friday. Lalhmingmawia (30), a teacher at the Primary School in Saichal village of Champhai district, was arrested by police yesterday and was brought to Champhai where he will be produced before a local district court later in the day. Champhai Superintendent of Police John Laldina said Lalhmingmawia was arrested after parents of two students lodged an FIR in nearby Ngopa police station. He said it was later learnt that 30 other students were also victims of sexual abuse by the teacher. Laldina said investigations revealed that the teacher molested the girls aged between 8 and 12 years over the past three years. The accused was appointed as the teacher of the Primary School by the village council in 2012. The victims earlier did not speak up out of fear as he had threatened the girls with dire consequences, the SP added. (PTI)

ULFA militant killed

Guwahati:An ULFA kingpin was killed and an Assam Rifles personnel injured in an encounter on the Assam-Nagaland border, defence sources said on Thursday.Following complaints by the people about movement of ULFA cadres in the area for extortion and infiltrating into Assam through Mokokchung and Mon districts in Nagaland, the 31 Assam Rifles launched an operation at Saringyunset village yesterday, the sources said. As the security force closed in, the insurgents opened fire and injured one securityman. The troops retaliated and the in the exchange of fire, that lasted for about 10 minutes, an ULFA extremist was killed. The body of self-styled ULFA lieutenant Prakash Bora, a resident of Jorhat, who was killed in the encounter, was recovered from the jungle, the sources said adding the slain militant was responsible for subversive activities in Jorhat, Golaghat and Sibsagar. AR apprehended two ULFA insurgents while combing the area.  The ammunition and explosives recovered from the ULFA cadres include one assault rifle, one .303 rifle, one pistol, large quantity of material for making improvised explosive devices (IED), two hand grenades, two bombs and over 300 rounds of assorted ammunition. The apprehended cadres later confessed that they were trained in explosive handling and were to target major populated centres in Assam in the near future, the sources added. (PTI)
