M’laya registers strong protest over Moolaber firing incident

SHILLONG: Meghalaya on Sunday filed a criminal case against Assam Police for the firing incident at Moolaber in West Jaintia Hills, resulting in injury to Jowai DSP Ploster Syiem.

Moreover, the district administration also lodged a strong protest against Assam over the firing incident.

Syiem was injured after a police team led by him was fired upon by Assam police personnel mistaking them for militants at Moolaber bordering Karbi Anglong where both Meghalaya and Assam police personnel were engaged in fighting Karbi militants.

“We have lodged a strong protest and registered a case against Assam police personnel,” Acting Deputy Commissioner D.M. Wahlang said on Sunday.

Despite intimation being sent to Assam Police about the deployment of Meghalaya police personnel at Moolaber, no care was taken by Assam, Wahlang said, adding that he would submit a report in this regard to the State Government.

A case was registered at Jowai PS against ASI Paban Bordoloi, who is in charge of Mynkoilum Outpost in Karbi Anglong and his accompanied staff. Inspector V. Upadhya, Officer in Charge of Jowai PS has taken up the investigation.

The cases were registered under sections 307/326/353/341/34 of the IPC read with section 27(1) of the Arms Act.

A high-level meeting was also held between Meghalaya and Assam officials at Mookoilum in Karbi Anglong on Sunday.

The members who represented Meghalaya in the meeting included Acting Deputy Commissioner D.M. Wahlang, DIG (Eastern Range) A.K. Sun, Magistrate L.T. Tariang and Addl. SP W. Muksor.

Assam was represented by DIG (Central range) P.C. Saloi, Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner P.K. Buragohain and Addl. SP B. Deori.

The meeting stressed on proper coordination between the police forces of the both the States.

While lamenting the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong expressed sympathy over to the injury caused to the Meghalaya DSP.

Officials of both Assam and Meghalaya also conducted a joint inspection of Moolaber area where the firing had taken place.
