NONGSTOIN: A former GNLA area commander of West Khasi Hills surrendered before Superintendent of Police S. Nongtnger at Nongshram village in West Khasi Hills on Tuesday.

Jongman surrendered on Tuesday morning at around 9:45am at Nongshram Bridge in the presence of the SP, Circle Inspector D. Mawlein and SI CR Marak of Shallang PS.

A young recruit who joined the armed group in the month of April, 2010, Kobit Ch. Marak alias Jongman (22) of Adugre in East Garo Hills, surrendered with an AK 56, three AK magazines, one walkie-talkie and 84 AK live ammunition.

Kobit was only 18 years old when he joined the GNLA. He also informed authorities that they became disillusioned with the outfit’s ideology where there was only killing and extortion. Kobit also revealed that he had realized that killings and extortions would lead to nowhere but towards a 6-ft long necropolis.

“Many of the GNLA cadres are ready to give themselves up and I hope that in the days to come many cadres will surrender,” Kobit alias Jongman revealed. In another case, a GNLA cadre identified as Jelliush Ch. Sangma alias Galmak (20) and hailing from Rongjeng Askipatal village in East Garo Hills, under Rongjeng PS surrendered before North Garo Hills SP J.F.K. Marak with a hand grenade on Tuesday after fleeing from an encounter with police in the eastern district in which two other militants were caught alive a day earlier, our Tura correspondent adds.
