SHILLONG: The Congress High Command has sought a detailed report from the Meghalaya Congress on the Deborah episode even as the MPCC has already sent a preliminary report to the AICC on the issue.

The State Congress president DD Lapang has been summoned to Delhi in this connection. Lapang is expected to leave for the national capital next week.

The AICC directive to the state party leadership was made known to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma during a one-to-one between him and the MPCC chief at the latter’s residence on Thursday afternoon.

The Chief Minister refused to divulge anything about the meeting saying that he had come to meet Lapang to discuss issues pertaining to the party affairs.

Sources, however, informed that the discussion between Sangma and Lapang revolved around chargesheeting of Social Welfare Minister Deborah Ch Marak for her alleged link with the proscribed Garo rebel outfit GNLA.

Meanwhile, Lapang informed that he had apprised the Chief Minister about the preliminary report submitted to the AICC over the controversy revolving around the Social Welfare Minister. “The preliminary report which was submitted to the AICC was prepared on the basis of news paper reports and other relevant documents. We will submit a detailed report to the party high command next week,” the MPCC president said.

He also revealed that AICC president Sonia Gandhi was aware about this development.

Meanwhile, the MPCC president admitted that the party leaders including MLAs are concerned about the Deborah episode. “We feel that this development is going to have a negative impact not only on the party but also on the Congress-led Government in the State,” Lapang added.
