SHILLONG: At a time when crimes against women are witnessing a rise in the State, the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home guards will start an unarmed combat training programme for girls and working women from January next year.
The initiative is aimed at building confidence among school and college girls and working women by empowering them for their personal defence and security, said Director General of Civil Defence and Home guard Kulbir Krishan.
Under the proposed programme, young girls, women in the age group of 18 to 35 years will be imparted basic martial art training (judo) so that they can defend themselves during any emergency situation by taking the enemy head on.
“We are keen to give the training to ensure that they have the confidence to take on the attacker,” he said
According to Kulbir Krishan, it will be a two-week training programme and a nominal amount would be charged from the participants.
He also said that if response is good, the participants would be given counselling and teach them certain dos and don’ts so that they do not get into such unwanted situation where girls are targeted by eve-teasers and goons .
He said that the training would be provided after every three months of the year.
The training was scheduled to start much earlier but it has been delayed due to unavoidable situations, he added.
