SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Rural Technology Centre which is coming up at Nongbah Myrdon village in Ri Bhoi District would be a model of technology for rural sectors, Director, C&RD Department, Akashdeep, said on Monday.

The Centre, base for which was laid on last week, aims to provide technical solutions to issues like housing, sanitation and clean energy in rural sectors.

According to Akashdeep, the proposed centre will be the second of its kind in the country, the first one being in Hyderabad.

The Centre, which will be known as Meghalaya State Rural Technology & Livelihood Promotion Centre, was sanctioned at an estimated amount of Rs.9.5 crore by the Ministry of State Institute of Rural Development.

Akashdeep said that people from different states would visit the Centre to learn the technologies and replicate it in their respective villages and states.

The project is expected to be completed in the next 4-5 year and a firm, IDFC, has been roped in to help the Government in designing the centre.

Akashdeep said that the biggest boon for the project has been the cooperation of the villagers who have come out wholeheartedly to give their land to the State Government for the centre.

“They have also assured full cooperation for the project,” he said.

The Rural Technology centre would help to spread the knowledge of science and technology among the masses and also help in providing appropriate technology for rural development.
