Unrest in Garo Hills: Home Minister takes moral responsibility

SHILLONG: Concerned over the killings of police personnel and the civilians due to militancy in Garo Hills, Home Minister Roshan Warjri tendered her resignation on Thursday night.

Informed sources said that pained over the series of killing of police personnel and the innocent civilians, Warjri tendered he resignation from the Cabinet owning moral responsibility of all those incidents.

Sources added that Warjri submitted her resignation letter to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, owning full moral responsibility for the law and order situation in Garo Hills, loss of precious lives of both civilians and men in uniform in the State particularly in Garo Hills” .

After the submission of resignation letter to the Chief Minister, Warjri also met the MPCC president DD Lapang to apprise him the matter.

The resignation of Warjri has come as a surprise ahead of the crucial Assembly session starting from Friday.

The Opposition is all set to take on the Government for deteriorating law and order situation and criminalization of politics. Though a section of the media was critical of Warjri, major initiatives of tackling ILP agitation and ethnic unrest in Garo Hills, signing of peace pact with ANVC,ANVC-B , and solution to strike of Petroleum Mazdoor Union among others were under her tenure.

Warjri became the first woman Home Minister when she was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister on March 12, 2013 holding additional portfolios of Home (jail) and PWD (building).
