Diphu:In an attempt to take development to the border areas, which have often faced disturbances from across the boundary (from Nagaland), the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) of Assam has decided to set up markets at interior borders to ensure that local farmers get standard price for their produce.
The first such border market under this plan was formally inaugurated at Misibailam, along Assam-Nagaland border, around 40 kilometres from Diphu, under Dhansiri police station, on Friday last.
Along with the main market shed, two additional market buildings were also inaugurated.
Departments like Social Welfare, Agriculture, Veterinary, Health & Family Welfare and Sericulture sold various items at subsidized rate and distributed materials as an aid among local villagers. The border markets are an initiative of the KAAC authority, often faced with criticism of neglecting the border areas.
Boundary disputes bet-ween Assam and Naga-land at various points, inclu-ding in Karbi Anglong district, have often taken bloody turn and continues to be a contagious issue. (UNI)
