SHILLONG: The Centre has rejected the State Government’s proposal to construct a multi-sport complex in New Shillong Township.
Informing this, Sports and Youth Affairs minister Zenith Sangma said that the state government’s proposal to construct sports complexes at Ampati and Tura, however, has got the Centre’s seal of approval.
For the New Shillong Township sports complex, the State Government had submitted Rs 158 crore proposal before the DoNER ministry.
The Government had proposed Rs 8o crore each for two projects in Garo Hills but the Union Government reduced the budget to Rs 40 crore each.
For the Shillong Sports Complex project, the State Government has submitted a Rs 200 crore proposal to the Centre. “We are serious about the project,” Sangma said adding that the Chief Minister is taking keen interest on the project and the matter is being continuously pursued with the Union Government.
According to Sangma, since the Centre did not agree to the idea of the multi-sport complex in New Shillong Township, the land, which was selected for the sports complex, would be now used for construction of a new Assembly building. “Land measuring 80 acres was handed over for the construction of the Assembly,” he said.
