SHILLONG: Jonathone Sangma, who dragged Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak to court for her alleged links with Garo militant outfit GNLA, finds himself amidst a new controversy after one woman filed a case under Section 493 of IPC (Cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief lawful marriage) and section 497 of IPC (cheating) against him.

The woman identified as Riya Sangma of Guwahati has filed a petition in the CJM Court , Kamrup Metro against Jonathone alleging that he had ‘cheated’ her despite having a wife.

In the FIR, the complainant said that she was introduced to him in March, 2010 in Guwahati as a bachelor and they developed a friendship and later Jonathone proposed to marry her and it was accepted.

The woman had insisted for a formal marriage, but he postponed it on the pretext of Meghalaya Assembly elections and promised to marry after the election. Later, he also brought legal papers for marriage and he told her that the legal process in connection with the marriage was over and it was followed by a get together.

Later, a baby boy was also born on December 4, 2011 at a hospital in Guwahati.

She also alleged that later a lady who claimed herself to be the wife of Jonathone had lodged a complaint that Riya Sangma had kidnapped him.

In the petition, Riya said that Jonathone later admitted that he was already married to one Krinilla Marak of Williamnagar even as she said that Jonathone Sangma later went to Williamnagar in September 2011 since then he never came back to meet her and at present he is living with his former wife and he has completely deserted the Riya Sangma as well as the 12-month-old boy. Riya Sangma has appealed the court to direct Basistha Police station to inquire into the case filed there besides punishing Jonathone as per provisions of the law.
