SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Education R.C. Laloo has informed that all untrained elementary school teachers in the State belonging to ST/ SC/ OBC categories should have a minimum of 45 per cent marks at the 10+2 level to enable them to upgrade themselves and undergo the two-year D.EI.Ed course.
Laloo’s statement was in response to a call attention notice by Chokpot legislator Clifford Marak in the Assembly on Tuesday.
He said that through a series of consultation process culminating in the decision taken at the meeting of the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SEMAM), the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) was directed to take steps to evolve and formulate a strategy with MBOSE to ensure that under-qualified in-service teachers are allowed to appear improvement examination at 10+2 level for obtaining necessary qualifications as required under NCTE.
According to the Minister, the DERT has compiled a list of 4049 teachers who do not fulfill the specified norms and the list has been forwarded to MBOSE for appropriate action.
He, further, informed that DERT has submitted a proposal to MBOSE to conduct examination for the 4049 under-qualified and untrained teachers who have been appointed after Sept 3, 2001 and had scores of less than 45 per cent marks.
It may be mentioned that over 8000 elementary-level teachers have submitted their application for the improvement examination.
